Parent and Guardian FAQs
Why is ClearWater Farm conducting this 10 Million Kids Taking Planetary Action Initiative?
We believe that children working with nature can help lead the way to a brighter future for us all. ClearWater Farm is a perfect place for kids to explore what they can do way better than adults with their boundless sense of wonder, curiosity and imagination.
What is the origin of 10 Million Kids Taking Planetary Action?
Last year, ClearWater Farm held a similar event for educational leaders from across North America who are involved in children’s media. They were here to discuss creating a plan to involve 10 million kids in climate action. They agreed kids should be co-creators—and planning for this year’s event began.
What is the goal/purpose of this event?
This year’s research event—working with Trent University and design consultancy, Ascentia—is giving youth the opportunity to explore what they can do way better than adults to imagine a thriving future for all, including taking climate action. As with all research projects with kids, parents must give their permission in writing to participate.
What kinds of activities are planned for our kids?
A two-day event in October at ClearWater Farm will give a group of young people the chance to dream up unimagined ways to help the planet and all people. Day one as envisioned by the Design Studio youth will be activation experiences in different areas around the farm and at the waterfront.
On day two, participants will translate their experiences into ideas for actions using art, science, photography, technology, music, and story making. They will also explore new roles and lines of work our world needs, and fresh ways of collaboration.
The process will be documented through photo, film and story.
The anticipated outcome? Ideas for action by kids for kids wrapped in hope, so desperately needed in the world today.
What is the location of the events?
The events are at ClearWater Farm, 1614 Metro Rd. N. Willow Beach, ON. ClearWater Farm is situated on the shores of beautiful Lake Simcoe. Since 2016, we have been transforming the 180-year-old Reed Farm, 30 acres, leased from the Town of Georgina, into a place that honours history and deepens young people’s connections with the natural environment, marrying the arts, science and technology to cultivate a more sustainable future. Visit www.clearwaterfarm.ca
Is there a fee to attend the event?
The events are free to participants and their parents. Participants are responsible for travel to and from the farm.
What should my child wear to the event?
We will be spending most of our time outside so please send your child with a refillable water bottle, sunscreen, hat and weather appropriate attire. We have several shaded areas throughout the property to provide relief from the sun and a beautiful barn should we need to move activities indoors.
Will food and drinks be provided?
Yes. ClearWater Farm will provide lunch and snacks. You are encouraged to pack whatever additional snacks/drinks your child might want and there will be breaks throughout the day. Please let us know ahead of time if your child has any dietary restrictions.
Who will be supervising the children?
We have assembled a team of experienced facilitators to encourage participation, foster a supportive environment, and offer assistance and guidance during exploratory and creative activities, while ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all participants. All staff and facilitators are required to provide vulnerable screening checks by their local police services. ClearWater staff are trained in Standard First Aid and CPR and will be onsite for the duration of the event.
What should I do if my child has a medical condition or needs medication during this event?
Please let us know in the registration forms if your child has any medical conditions or requires medication. ClearWater staff are trained in Standard First Aid and CPR and will be onsite for the duration of the event.
Who do I contact if I have more questions?
Please email Samantha.delenardo@ontariowatercentre.ca for any questions related to this event.
Building the Movement
The First Step
In 2023, 24 environmental and education thought leaders from across Canada and the U.S. gathered at ClearWater Farm for a 24 hour Think Tank inspired by nature. Stimulated by experiences on the land and beside the waters of Lake Simcoe, they concluded wholeheartedly that the time is NOW to give kids agency. Why not, the group said, convene kids (8-14) at ClearWater Farm in the same way they had gathered to intuitively generate ideas and share their feelings about the ways young people could take action towards a flourishing future for Planet Earth.
International Design Studio
On August 21st, nine kids aged 8 – 14, gathered at ClearWater Farm while another group gathered in Zomba, Malawi. This “International Design Studio” was the next step in the journey to inspire 10 Million Kids to Take Planetary Action. The overarching goal is to gather kid-led, yet-unimagined ideas on how we can better protect the planet, and our future.
With a live connection between the two groups and parallel experiences designed to activate the kids’ spontaneity, curiosity, and wonder- their expanding imaginations and wonderful ideas provided input to inform: The Planet Futures Dream Camp.
